Three Theses on the Social Dimensions of Higher Education

As we search for some fundamental principles about higher education in facing an ever more uncertain future, it may be well to look critically at our past. In this paper I will do so, looking at history both recent and distant, in settings that I have some familiarity with. I formulate three theses: one on diversity, one on excellence, and one on responsiveness.
